I’ve been contemplating all week whether or not to tell you guys about this detox I’ve started. Basically, if I fail, I don’t want the world to know. Then, I thought, if I post about it, maybe it will be the motivation I need to keep going. I started an ARBONNE 28 day cleanse on Wednesday, June 1, and yesterday I thought I was going to go postal on my family. Really, I did. Day 2, and I already felt like a failure.
I’m a sugar freak. I’ve heard sugar is as addictive as street drugs, and while I’ve never partaken in any sort of drug, I believe the comparison is true. Yesterday, I craved sugar so much I dreamt of sweet tea. I haven’t had sweet tea since I moved from Arkansas six years ago. That’s how bad I wanted sugar.
And, today, the strangest thing happened. I woke up feeling somewhat clear, and optimistic that maybe this cleanse might work for me. Granted it’s only day three. Tomorrow may be a whole new ball game.
On the detox you are advised to eliminate sugar, dairy, gluten and coffee from your diet. Have you read my posts about Starbucks? I’m a freak. I visit there every-single-day. And I have to eliminate coffee? Say what? Does espresso count?!
In all honesty, the coffee has been the easiest. What’s been the hardest is actually thinking about the food that I put in my mouth. I hate cooking. I’m the queen of drive-thru’s and fast food. If it’s quick and easy, I’m there. But sadly, I’ve come to the realization that some of the food’s I’ve been eating aren’t what should be classified as real food. I struggle with eating healthy and doing what’s right for my body, and I figured maybe some of y’all do too. So, with that being said, I’m going to share a few of the recipes I’ve made this week that have been dairy, sugar, and gluten free. Yeah, there actually ARE recipes that don’t contain those three things. I know, I was shocked, too.
Now, before you check these meals out, note I’m not a chef. Let me repeat, I am NOT a chef. I’m not even a good cook. Ask my husband. But these recipes actually looked pretty and tasted pretty good, too. I hope you enjoy!
Stuffed Peppers- Erin’s Way.
I took ground chicken and cooked it. While that was cooking, I cut the heads off my peppers and pulled out the guts. Also, while those two things were happening, I had quinoa simmering in a pot on the stove top.
Once the meat was cooked, I drained the excess fat. I took prepackaged chopped green onions and white onions (because who wants to cry over cutting onions?) and tossed some in a skillet with some olive oil to brown. When those got yummy and caramelized, I added the meat back. At this point, I realized my meat looked a little too colorless, so I pulled some pico out of the fridge and tossed that in the skillet as well. Then, I tossed in some onion powder, garlic powder, parsley, and Tony Chachere’s. I don’t have measurements for these things, I just sprinkled it in.
Once that was all mixed and didn’t look too scary, I grabbed my peppers and placed them on a baking sheet. I put olive oil on the inside of the pepper because I thought that sounded like a good idea, then I filled half the pepper with quinoa and the other half with the meat mixture. I popped them in the oven at 400 for about 20 minutes. Dinner was done, and shockingly enough, tasted pretty good for health food. Who would have known?
Now, I’ll admit, these would have tasted a thousand times better with a lot of cheese on top, but that was against my 28 days of no dairy. So, no cheese for me!
Ground chicken, or turkey, or beef, or sausage, or bison, or whatever you want ground up.

Another lovely I made was this Shrimp and Avocado Salad that I copied from iowagirleats.com. While Iowa Girl suggested adding blue corn chips to the dish, I omitted those for the purpose of the cleanse. Also, the recipe calls for honey in the dressing. I also took that out, and the salad still tasted amazing. And for an extra protein boost, I added a couple of boiled eggs! Gotta have your protein!
